All Africa Conference of Churches on AIDS crisis
- The All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) in collaboration with other
partners including the World Council of Churches (WCC) recently facilitated a
three-day consultation of church leaders on the approach to address the HIV/AIDS
crisis. The church leaders, from North, East and Southern Africa, met in Mukono
(Uganda). Activities at the consultation included listening to expert advice on
the crisis; identifying the root causes of HIV/AIDS; sharing local initiatives
that give hope; visiting Kampala-based HIV/AIDS programme sites; deciding on
common and more practical strategies; and commitment to breaking the deafeningsilence on HIV/AIDS. The general goal of the AACC HIV/AIDS programme is tofacilitate ways in which the churches in Africa, especially the leadership,could be better informed to enable them to respond more positively to theHIV/AIDS pandemic. The Government of Rwanda has recently signed agreements for provision of
anti-retrovirals with four pharmaceutical firms - Glaxo-Smithkline, Merck-Sharp
and Dohme, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Boehringer-Ingelheim at lower costs. This isa result of negotiation facilitated by UN agencies between countries and

In support of the International Partnership against HIV/AIDS in Africa, a
Senior Experts Conference organised jointly by UNESCO and UNAIDS on HIV/AIDS andEducation in countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)is scheduled to take place from March 19 to 23, 2001, in Elmina, Ghana. ThisConference builds upon the Africa Development Forum held in Addis Ababa inDecember 2000 and aims to mobilize the education sector in ECOWAS countries inthe fight against HIV/AIDS.
