Burkina Faso roundtable A Roundtable Conference of Donors for HIV/AIDS Control 2001-2005, was held in Ougadougou, Burkina Faso, in June. The roundtable was successful and demonstrated how a good strategic plan, through a participative process, leads to strong donor support. The strategic framework 2001-2005 was endorsed by all partners. Pledges were made for US$ 93,9 million, for an estimated cost of US$ 101,5 million. All speakers stressed the importance of the IPAA and its application at country level as the guiding vision for the strategic framework. DFID IPAA contract goes to Action Aid In early July, the Department for International Development (DFID) announced the awarding of its Support to IPAA project to the international NGO, Action Aid, in a consortium with Futures Group Europe and drawing on the expertise of African organisations such as AMREF, AfriCASO, RATN, HEARD and others. The three-year project, amounting to more than 23 million pounds (about US$ 34m) will provide support to national planning and activity implementation in each of Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana and Rwanda. In addition, Action Aid will establish a regional assistance office in Nairobi, to provide further assistance to other countries in the areas of impact monitoring, management capacity building, and behaviour change communication against stigma and to promote safe sex practices. A press release is available on the unaids web site. For further information, please contact Dr. Jacqueline Bataringaya, Action Aid, at bataringayaj@aafrica.org.zw 2. Anglican Archbishops of Africa The Anglican Archbishops of Africa are to launch a Sub-Saharan initiative that will aim to forge an effective partnership between faith-based communities, governments, civil society and other agencies. Initiated by the Anglican Church, the programme aims to include all other Christian denominations in a common effort to curb the spread of the epidemic and to provide care and support. The official launch at a workshop in August will introduce participants to a basic tool kit for developing skills in counselling people living with HIV/AIDS and other aspects of dealing with the epidemic. The UNAIDS Intercountry Team and the World Bank are actively assisting the Anglican Church with this initiative. For more information please contact Reverend Ted Karpf at revkarpf@mweb.co.za or by telephone 27 21 424 7360. 4. Stigma under the spotlight UNAIDS with Health and Development Networks (HDN) and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) collaborated in hosting a meeting about Stigma and HIV/AIDS in June, in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. The meeting aimed to develop a regional consensus for action and to define areas for operational research to better understand stigma. The end result, The Dar es Salaam Advocacy for Action on Stigma and HIV/AIDS in Africa, outlines action to be taken. This document was first distributed at UNGASS and will also be extensively promoted at the forthcoming World Conference against Racism where the issue of stigma onHIV/AIDS is expected to feature prominently.
